Art/DT
in Years 1 and 2 involves using a range of materials and taking part in tasks
relating to topics covered in class, which improve important skills such as
cutting accurately. For the children, it
is a bonus if they are allowed to get dirty at the same time! This is further extended in Years 3 and 4
where, along with higher expectations and advancing skills, children use tools
such as saws and cramps and have specialist DT teaching in the Art room.
A
favourite activity is using clay and even the teacher finds this
therapeutic! Again, many of the tasks
relate to cross-curricular project work.
For example, following a visit to Phear Park,
Exmouth, as part of ‘Improving the Environment’, Year 4 designed and made parks
suitable for all age groups. This gave
them an opportunity to use a range of tools and materials to improve their
skills, to see a project through from designing to the end product, and, above
all, to be creative.
