Healthy Eating
At
St Peter’s, educating a child does not end in the classroom. We firmly believe that learning about food is
an important part of their development, as eating plays an important part in a
person’s day-to-day life, not only as a means to provide the body with all the
required elements to stay alive, but also because meal times are an important
social occasion. Pupils are taught all
the essential facts about diet and the body’s needs, and this is complemented
by the healthy, balanced meals that are cooked for them by our own kitchen
staff.
Furthermore,
children eat together in the dining room under the watchful eye of the staff,
which ensures that they eat sufficient quantity and quality and this also helps
them to learn good table manners and etiquette whilst eating.
Our
menus are carefully devised to take into consideration the children’s likes/dislikes,
repetition of choice, food colour, cooking methods, flavours and balance to
provide variation and appropriate nutritional content. Our food is freshly prepared daily, using the
best ingredients that, where possible, are locally grown or sourced. We also aim to use seasonal foods as much as
possible and these changes are built into the menu every term. We cater for most tastes and requirements, providing
delicious hot and cold meals that are low in fat, sugar and salt and high in
fibre, vitamins and minerals. Just what
growing children need!
In
addition to the hot meal each day, there is a full salad bar which
includes
jacket potatoes, freshly prepared salad items, pasta, rice and cold
meats and
cheese. Due to the number of nut-related allergies and the risk of
anaphylactic shock, we do not use or allow nuts to be brought into
school.
Children may bring a snack in for mid morning break and this should
consist of a piece of fruit, cheese and biscuits or a small sandwich,
preferably with a healthy filling!
Devon is one of the richest counties in
the country in terms of its production of high quality meat and crops and we
are pleased and proud to be able to support the following suppliers:

eggs
Kenniford Farm, Clyst St Mary for all our pork and
pork products
T S Symons Butchers, Exmouth for all our other
