For New Parents: How the Children Learn: Nursery/Reception
Learning Overview

The children in Shell 3 (what we call our Nursery) enjoy a broad curriculum with the Early Learning goals set out by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA).  Each term we work with a specific theme that highlights not only the core subjects but also serves to further the children’s experiences in history, geography and art.

A normal week would include an activity with “Musik Garten”.  This is a period when we encourage movement, an exploration of language, singing and listening skills that revolves around making music.  The class has a French lesson once a week with the emphasis very much on practical experiences, including the gastronomic.

We use the school grounds (28 acres) to carry out our nature studies and talk about different types of animals we might see.  We aim to allow the children to learn and improve their skills through fun and play, so each child will be given a target that will be personal to their learning and can lead to the award of an achievement star.

Through their year in Shell 4 (Reception), the children will continue to participate in activities where they can explore, investigate, discover, create, practise, repeat, revise and consolidate their developing knowledge, skills, understanding and attitudes.
