For New Parents:
How the Children Learn:
Nursery/Reception
Communication, Language & Literacy
Learning within the nursery splits into a)
speaking and listening and b) reading and writing. At this very young age we concentrate on
developing their speaking and listening skills and we encourage children to
speak clearly in a confident manner with particular emphasis on the normal
conventions of “please” and “thank you”.
Mostly through play we use language to imagine and recreate roles and
experiences.
Story time is an important part of our day, which the
children enjoy, particularly with the visual aids. The Nursery is also subject to the school
handwriting policy. This essentially
starts with ensuring the correct grip is adopted every time a pencil, crayon or
paintbrush is used.
When the children move up to Reception, more formal activities are
introduced which run alongside practical tasks that will enable them to
further develop their speaking and listening, reading and writing skills. The
Jolly Phonics scheme plays an important part in the understanding of
sounds and emergent writing activities are introduced so they can put
their sound knowledge into practice, writing for a range of purposes. The focus
is to ensure the children have the correct pencil grip, good pencil control and
correct letter formation. Independent reading skills will develop and knowledge
of key words extended. Pupils will take part in class assemblies once a
term, role play and imaginative play.
