For New Parents:
How the Children Learn:
Nursery/Reception
Mathematical Development
The numeracy goals of the Foundation Stage are pursued
through the children learning by organised practical activities. We encourage the children to notice numbers
in their everyday environment to help them recognise the numbers 1 to 5 and 6
to 10 and know their number names.
Activities in the Nursery include counting tasks, for example, saying
the numbers in order and matching objects to numbers. We also involve the children with practical
tasks with two-dimensional objects and shapes, and learning how to distinguish
shapes in the environment and rolling objects.
Much of the number work is carried out using the numbers as a visual aid
and singing simple repetitive rhymes and songs.
In Reception, the Foundation stage guidelines are closely
followed and the children will develop confidence and competence in learning
and using key skills, with growing mathematical understanding through a range
of practical activities, games, stories, songs and imaginative play. The
children will participate in more formal written activities to enable them to
practise correct number formation and number recognition.
