History of St Peter's School 1882-1923

Why, do you ask, when St Peter’s celebrated its centenary in 1884 and the school sign on the main road to Exmouth declares that St Peter’s was founded in 1884 are we celebrating the 125th year early?

As part of our centenary year the school commissioned Gerald Millington, Hope Bardrick’s cousin, and a keen and able Historian, to research our history.  His investigation revealed that the Rev. Alfred Wren had opened St Peter’s at 5 Raleigh Villas, his own home, with five pupils (boys only).  Named after his Cambridge College, Peterhouse, he started his new school on Wednesday, 20th September, 1882.

Martyn Beckett, a former member of staff, has undertaken to update Gerald’s hard work and produce a composite History, but he needs your help.  First and foremost the publication is being funded by subscribers and secondly he would be delighted if you could forward any anecdotes and reminiscences and equally important, photos.

If you can help, please contact Martyn at martyn@localnews.eclipse.co.uk

DATABASE

The main challenge as part of the 125th year is to update our database so that we can produce a complete list of pupils who attended the School.  Sadly full records only exist since the days of Harold Falkner, when he started numbering pupils.  Do please respond with details, and those of your friends and contemporaries with whom you are still in contact.
