Pastoral Care - A Personal Reflection Let’s face it, we all enjoy the holidays. Yes, holidays are times when we can rest, recuperate, recharge the batteries and so on. But, paramount to all this, I believe, is the luxury, if it is possible, to have your own time to spend as you see fit. Many people may not relish the thought of returning to work or school after a break but during a recent pre-term staff training day, I was delighted to receive an email from a pupil, that read as follows: Dear Mr Lord. I hope you have had the best of holidays with your family. I am looking forward to the new term a lot. From ….. This email gave me a real lift! How many grown-ups remember being lucky enough to have felt like that about returning to school after a holiday? I see this as a reflection of the amazing job done by the whole staff team here at St. Peter’s.
I believe that my role in Pastoral care is about making sure that everyone in our school community feels happy, secure, confident and valued. Why? We learn best when we are happy. We are strongest when we are secure. We are willing to take steps into the unknown when we are confident. We are the most resilient when we feel worthwhile and valued.
At St. Peter’s we go to the ends of the Earth to employ the very best staff. We are lucky to be able to choose from the best, because our school has a great reputation as being a fabulous place in which to live and work and learn together. The staff team work together tirelessly to provide the kind of pastoral care that is second to none, so that the aims above can be achieved. I also happen to believe that better quality long term learning happens when we have the freedom to make mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes from time to time, and at St. Peter’s, we encourage it! The more we learn from our mistakes, the less likely we are to make them again. Making a mistake is therefore nothing to worry about, as we can use it as a stepping stone on our learning journey. Simple, really! When you visit our school, I hope that you will see these principles in action from the moment you step through the door. We all look forward to welcoming you. Deputy Headmaster
